On September 11th, 2014, at the age of 96, Mary Waite Coker joined her husband, William R. Coker, her parents, Henry and Justus Wait and her three sisters, Esther Ayers, Ruth Wilson and Francis Waldrup in Heaven. Our family can sense her joy and smile in being rejoined with those she loved and missed, free from her failing body, embraced in God’s arms.
Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend was a sweet, gentle soul that cared deeply for her family and friends. We are comforted by sharing our memories of how she touched and shaped our lives in so many positive ways.
In her youth, mom was head cashier at the Alabama Theatre during the golden age of movies. She married our wonderful father in 1939, with whom she provided an ideal home for her children in Homewood. She was a charter member of Oakmont United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mary became lifelong friends with her neighbors on Gillon Drive to whom our family is grateful for their love and support to our early widowed mom. Mom loved her home, her garden, her church and her Oak Grove community which sustained her in both happy and difficult times.
Mom is survived by her three children, Linda Goodwin , Don Coker (Sandra) and Phillip Coker; grandchildren Dale Coker, Lindsay Corley, Chris Goodwin, Jennifer Rasch and Todd Goodwin; great-grandchildren Sawyer, Wyatt, Jack, Sam, Elizabeth, William, Grace, Christopher and Holden.
Our family is grateful for the care she received at Chateau Vestavia, Greenbriar at the Altamont and by New Beacon Hospice.
Visitation at 1:00PM and funeral services at 2:00PM will be held at Oakmont United Methodist Church, 914 Oak Grove Road, Homewood, AL 35209 on Tuesday September 16th with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to Oakmont United Methodist Church, 914 Oak Grove Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
