Mary Anne Holmes Stone, 77, passed away on July 3, 2024. She was the second of five children born to the late Martha Blackburn Holmes and Robert Holmes on January 17, 1947 in Birmingham, AL. Mary Anne graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1965 and University of Alabama in 1969. On November 14, 1969, Mary Anne married her college sweetheart, Ricky. Her first seven years of employment were with South Central Bell in the Engineering Department then became a mathematics teacher at her alma mater, Shades Valley High School. Mary Anne retired from Shades Valley as Head of the Math Department after 25 years.
Mary Anne loved playing music all around the world and was a member of several bands including Cider Mill and The Toadstompers where she played guitar and bass fiddle. For over 20 years, Mary Anne and Ricky played every Friday for the skilled-nursing residents at Kirkwood by the River Retirement Home. After Covid, they continued to play for the assisted and independent living residents. Mary Anne was a talented artist and was well known for her beautiful artwork. She also loved gardening and especially loved sharing her plants with friends and neighbors.
Mary Anne is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ricky, sister, Jenny Holmes Jenkins (Jimmy), brother, Bill Holmes (Lori), sister-in-law, Cindy Holmes, sister-in-law, Sharon Stone Samford and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Martha and Robert Holmes, twin brothers, Richard and Robert Holmes and brother in law, Frank Samford III.
A Celebration of Life for Mary Anne will be held at The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Hodges Room, 2612 Lane Park Road on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 1:OO pm.
