She lived in Birmingham all her 92 years where she attended Lakeview Elementary, Ramsay High School and Birmingham Southern College. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Birmingham. She had a long career with General Electric and later became active in the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, Silhouettes Dance Club, “The Sewing Club” and Queen of Spades Garden Club. After her retirement and her marriage to Jack, they enjoyed fun trips with friends and family.
She is survived by her children: Lee Ann (Jim) Harris, Nancy (Jon) Putman, Sue (Dan) Meadows, Debbie (Ben) Hendrix, Ginny (Jon) Campbell and John Cary Alexander; nephews and nieces: Steve, Ken and Jim Speir, Michelle, Nikki, Steven, Chase, Katie, Lizzie, Suzy, J.P. and Marilyn; many cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in passing by her husband Jack Alexander, her parents Paul and Bessie Shropshire, brothers Paul Jr. and Buddy Shropshire, sister Teeny Shropshire Speir and brother-in-law Charley Speir. Special thanks to Denise, Vera and Temika for their exceptional support and tender care.
Mary (or "Shings") will be missed but remembered by many for her smile, lovely complexion, feisty spirit, attention to detail, collection of knick-knacks and plants, and love of pretty clothes, shoes and purses.
The family will receive friends Tuesday May 9th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm at Ridout’s Valley Chapel to share memories of Mary.
