Lowell Allen Hamilton, 83, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away November 8, 2022. He was born April 2, 1939 in Harlan County, Kentucky to Orie and Ethel Morse Hamilton. He attended Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky; graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky with a B.S. degree; received an M.S. from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio; then completed a residency in Hospital Administration at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
In 1965 he joined the Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama, where he spent his career until retiring in 1999 as President of the Health Systems Division. Lowell continued serving as a deacon in his church, on various boards, as a Rotarian, and in other community organizations. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and scuba diver.
Lowell was married 62 years to his beloved wife Sara Standifer Hamilton, who survives him. They met as members of Berea College Country Dancers and continued that activity as part of an alumni group which travelled to many places in the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob Morse; a sister, Marie Hamilton Walker; a sister Kathleen Caudill; and one son, Greg Hamilton (Carol). He is survived by a sister, Wavelene Brashear of Hazard, Kentucky; two sons, Mark Hamilton and Keith Hamilton (Amy) of Birmingham; and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Hamilton of Birmingham. He also leaves twelve grandchildren: Ethan (Laura) Hamilton, Elliott (Dana) Hamilton, Dylan (Ashley) Gordon, Will Gordon, Leanna (Luke) Wilkening, Walker Hamilton, Asher Hamilton, Jackson Gordon, Turner Hamilton, Charlie Hamilton, Kyle Hamilton, Sara Jane Hamilton, and two great-granddaughters, Claire Hamilton and Holly Hamilton.
Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, November 16, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209 and a Celebration of Life at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, 2600 Vestavia Drive, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216 on Thursday, November 17, 2022 with visitation from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. followed by the service at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the Hamilton family requests that donations be made to the Vestavia Hills Baptist Church Permanent Endowment Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.
