Louise Carter Bailey passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama surrounded by her family. She was born August 28, 1933, in Birmingham and spent her early years there and in Mobile. She graduated from Phillips High School, and later graduated from the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University. A Registered Nurse, she worked for many years at Saint Vincent's Hospital and volunteered for medical missions trips in Honduras. She enjoyed a marriage of over 50 years to Ryburn Hancock Bailey Sr. with whom she raised four children. She loved spending time with her children and twelve grandchildren. An avid bridge player in numerous bridge clubs, she enjoyed the fellowship of the game as much as the cards. Traveling, hiking with the Audubon group, bird watching, and taking trips to the beach and the mountains were among her favorite things. She adored her friends, many of whom were lifelong friends, and their many adventures and trips together brought her great joy. There was always room for one more friend in her life. She was a member of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, the Lilies and the Tremont Garden Clubs, Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, Silhouettes Dance Club, the Argus Book Club and the Birmingham Country Club. She will always be remembered for her love of life, her great sense of humor and her wonderful laugh.
Preceding her in death were her parents Mr.and Mrs. Raymond Carter, husband Ryburn Hancock Bailey Sr., and granddaughter Virginia Gray Bailey. She is survived by her four children Louise Bailey Duffy (Thomas Michael), Ryburn Hancock Bailey (Caroline Simpson), Edith Bailey Tinsley and Carol Bailey Whitfield (Theodore Krouse), and her eleven grandchildren Caroline Louise Matte, Thomas Michael Duffy Jr., Anna Bailey Duffy, Olivia Hancock Bailey, Eleanor Harris Bailey, Dylan Raymond Tinsley, Hunter Alan Tinsley, Lucille Hancock Whitfield, Charlotte Bailey Whitfield, Mary Louise Whitfield, and Theodore Ryburn Whitfield.
Services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Friday May 9, at 11:00. Visitation will begin at 10:00 in the Founders Room.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made be to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Salvation Army, 2130 11th Avenue N.Birmingham, Alabama 35234.
