Laurence (Larry) H. Johnson, age 73, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on December 21, 2024. His sudden departure has left an immense void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. Larry was a beacon of light, always ready with a warm smile, a kind word, an open heart, and generous spirit.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Larry was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. He served as Extraordinary Minister for the distribution of Holy Communion and was a committed adorer at Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel of Perpetual Adoration. Larry was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Larry’s dedication to serving others extended far beyond his church community. He volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospitals, offering pastoral care and comfort to patients and families. He served at Encore community respite program at Canterbury United Methodist Church, enriching the lives of others through fellowship and activities. Additionally, Larry helped prepare and serve meals to those in need at the Firehouse Shelter. Larry was also a member of SAR.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Searcy H. Johnson, Jr., and Henrietta Cocek Johnson. He is survived by his beloved sisters, Norma Ogletree and Nancy Morgan (Dick), as well as his niece and nephews; Kavan Ogletree, Elizabeth Ogletree, Connor Morgan (Lydia), and Drew Morgan. Larry is also survived by a circle of cherished friends, many of whom he had known since grade school.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 27, 2024 beginning at 12 noon with the funeral mass at 1:00 pm at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with the burial following at Elmwood Cemetery with Father Robert Sullivan officiating.
During this time of sorrow, let us hold onto the joy, laughter, and love Larry brought into our lives. His memory will live on in the stories we share, the lives he touched, and the countless moments that remind us of the extraordinary person he was.
