Kathryn “Kitty” Wynn McIntosh Newell died peacefully and comfortably at home on March 2, 2024. Kitty was born in Birmingham to Mrs. Kathryn Wynn and Joseph McIntosh. During her 102 years, Kitty lived in Norwood, Homewood, Hoover, and Vestavia Hills.
Kitty was preceded in death by her husband Neal Newell (2005) of 61 years; her son, Neal Curtis “Curt” Newell (2019); and her younger sister, Betty Jo Allen (2023). Kitty is survived by her daughter Kathy and son-in-law Dr. Frank “Bubba” Brush; her son Joseph Newell and son-in-law Dr. Eric Collier; and daughter-in-law Sara Lynn Newell. Kitty is also survived by six grandchildren: David Brush (Lisa), Kathryn Strubel (Patrick), Aren Williams (Jason), Brendt Blanks (Andy), Luke Newell (Katie), and Mattie Neal Newell; and sixteen great-grandchildren. The family is forever grateful for Kitty’s long-term caregiver and dear friend, Jan Cason, R.N.
Kitty graduated from Phillips High School where her senior ambition was “Always Laugh When You Can,” a philosophy she wholeheartedly endorsed throughout her life. Kitty attended Judson College where she later served on the Board of Trustees. She graduated from Howard College with a degree in English.
She was a longtime member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church where she and Neal were Sunday School teachers and longtime supporters of the church. Kitty and Neal loved to travel with family and friends, including with their beloved Bridge Club.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on March 7, 2024, at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Dr. Gary Furr officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church.
