John David Nixon Sr. was born on March 22, 1946 in the district of Kilburn, county of Middlesex in London, England to John Tom Nixon and Valerie Joy Nixon (Rogers). Mr. Nixon died on June 14, 2022 after a hard fought battle with colon cancer. Visitation for Mr. Nixon will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 9:00AM with the service starting at 10:00AM at Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood, Alabama. Pastor Chris Wilson will officiate the service.
Mr. John, as he was known, was a graduate of Samford University and was studying to be a counselor. Mr. John spent over 31 years serving others by not only driving a school bus, but also a church bus and assisting with the Shades Valley High School Band, athletic programs. He also drove summer field trips to places all over the state of Alabama. Whether it was back and forth to school, to sporting events, band trips or during his off time driving a church bus, Mr. John loved what he did. Over his 31 years of driving a bus, it is estimated that he carried close to a half of million students, parents and instructors all over this country. He will forever be in Shades Valley High School history when his school bus and a cow met on a dark highway as they were coming back from a school function. He loved his job because he loved people and had a servant’s heart.
Mr. John is preceded in death by his Father, John Tom Nixon and his Mother, Valerie Joy Nixon and his Step-mother Christine Nixon. Mr. John is survived by his two sisters, Tina Runyan (Donald) and Carolyn Nixon Grammer; two children, John David Nixon Jr. and Sharon Elaine Wilkerson; five grandchildren, William Austin Nixon, Victoria Ruth Nixon, Justin Pate, Dakota Wilkerson and Lane Wilkerson.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the John Nixon Bus Driver Memorial fun through any Regions Bank. This fund will allow new bus drivers an opportunity to get started on the right foot with their careers and to reward bus drivers for their outstanding service.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com for the Nixon family.
