J. Paul Meeks, Jr. of Vestavia Hills passed away on February 13, 2018. He was born in Birmingham, July 18, 1928 to Paul and Mabel Meeks. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jackie Berry. He attended Holman Grammar and Woodlawn High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama and the Birmingham School of Law. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
He entered the U.S. Army in June 1951 where he served until June 1953 as a First Lieutenant in Germany.
He was with Engel Agency for 26 years, obtaining the position of Vice president. A former member and served on the Board of Governors of Vestavia Country Club, Board the Metropolitan Dinner Club, as president of the Eastwood Optimist Club and member of Canterbury Methodist Church.
He represented Jefferson County in the State Legislature for 12 years.
His first wife Joan, Marsha’s mother, died in 1996. He was also preceded by his second wife, Betty. He is survived by his daughter, Marsha Vickers (Owen); grandson Tal Vickers (Julie), granddaughters, Lelie Wright (Trent), Joni Kniseley (Chris) and Maggie Schmidt (Caleb) and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by stepsons Mike Vaughn (Mary), Austin Vaughn (Dianne) and their children, Molly, Kelly and David.
The family will receive friends 1:00 – 2:00 on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 2:00. The burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
