Elaine Killette Smith, of Birmingham, passed away December 23rd, 2024. Elaine was a graduate of Phillips High School. She attended the University of Alabama where she met her future husband, Dr. Lamar Smith. Early in their marriage, they enjoyed living in New Orleans, San Francisco, and Columbia, South Carolina.
Elaine and Lamar then returned to Birmingham for many busy, happy years. Elaine's interests included skiing, travel, tennis, golf, bridge, music, and floral arranging. As a long-time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she was an active member of ECW and served on the Altar Guild. Elaine was an avid writer, producing fundraising events for The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Children's Theatre and The Service Guild of Birmingham. She was Chairman of the Ambassador's Ball for The Birmingham Festival of Arts, an officer in The Service Guild, and a member of the Rockridge and Lilies of the Valley Garden Clubs, Harlequins Dance Club, and The Country Club of Birmingham.
Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Lamar M.C. Smith, junior, (2010); parents, Rush and Nan Sue Harkins Killette, and brothers, Robert Killette and Jim Killette. Elaine is survived by her children: Alison Smith Hawk (Jett), Leslie Smith Anderson (Doug) of Mobile, and Mabry Smith, III (Michele). Gigi adored and was extremely proud of her seven grandchildren: John Hawk, Stewart Hawk, Elaine Anderson Bradberry (Kyle), Killette Anderson, Mary Douglas Anderson, Camille Smith, Adele Smith; and great grandchildren, David Bradberry and Leslie Ann Bradberry. Elaine is also survived by her niece, Kathleen Killette Franklin (Bill), of Chevy Chase, Maryland; and cousin, Lynette Horton (Robert). The family would like to thank Jackie and Tee for their compassionate care.
A private family service will be held at St. Luke's.
