A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Ned was graduated from E.C. Glass High School, Mars Hill Junior College, and Virginia Tech. After being commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy, he saw sea duty during the Vietnam era. Following active duty, he affiliated with the Navy Reserve where he held several commands, retiring in 1992.
Ned was employed by BP Oil Company (formerly Gulf Oil) and retired in 1999 after 33 years of service.
Captain Barrett was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Louis Barrett, Sr. and Sally Burkholder Barrett; and by his daughter, Mary Melissa Byrd. He is survived by his sons, Edward "Ted" Barrett, III, and William Daniel Barrett; and six grandchildren, all of Richmond, Virginia; In addition, he leaves a brother, Donald James Barrett (Karen) of Kent, Ohio, and a sister, Sally Rhetta Bearden (Jim) of Charlottesville, Virginia; He is also survived by his loving companion and friend, Linda Ellen Price, of Springville, Alabama.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Tuesday, the 19th of November, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ridout’s Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. The Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the 20th of November, at Holy Infant of Prague Catholic Church located at 8090 Gadsden Highway, Trussville, Alabama 35173. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Gerald Holloway will officiate.
Military honors and burial for Captain Barrett will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, at a later date.
Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205.879.3401) in Homewood, Alabama.
