Donald L Cook, 89, was born in Illinois and moved to Birmingham at age 8. He died peacefully on August 30 in Birmingham. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Augustus Cook, and his daughter Ann.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara, and his children, Martha (and husband, Lee) and Gary,(and wife, Katharine) and grandson Thomas.
A graduate of Ensley High School, Don attended Harvard College to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering, where over a bowl of punch he met the future Barbara Cook. Don participated in Naval ROTC in college and sailed with the Navy around the world after graduating. Having worked at Harbert Corporation raking gravel while in high school, he and Barbara returned to Birmingham after marrying, where he continued working at Harbert for 40 years until his retirement as Vice-President.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the fund for Diabetes Research or a charity of your choice.
A graveside service will be held in Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday, September 3 at 10 a.m.
