Though he wore many hats, Rep. David W. Wheeler was perhaps best known as a servant leader throughout his home state of Alabama, especially in the Republican Party and at his alma mater, the University of Montevallo.
Born in Jemison, Alabama, in 1950, he died the morning of March 9, 2022, at the age of 72.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Diane Reeves Wheeler and daughter Jessica Tyra. They lived in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
For 29 years, Wheeler worked for Alabama Power where he held many positions, including director of accounting, finance and regulatory services and primary liaison for the Alabama Public Service Commission. He served in governmental affairs for Alabama Power in Washington D.C. during this time.
Civically, he was a leader in the Republican Party serving as treasurer of the Alabama Republican Party, a member of the Jefferson County Republican Committee and the Alabama Republican steering and executive committees. Most recently, he served in the House of Representatives for the 47th district.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Montevallo in 1972. He later earned an MBA from Samford University in 1976.
In 2008 he became a member of the Montevallo Board of Trustees. He served as chair of the personnel committee and vice chair of the board of trustees and executive committee. His term was set to end in 2032.
In April 2009, The David W. and Diane R. Wheeler Endowed Scholarship was created at Montevallo, which is available to a full-time junior or senior business student from Chilton County majoring in business.
The funeral will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Homewood at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12. Visitation starts at 9:30a.m.The service will be live-streamed on Facebook, Vimeo and on the All Saints website.
