Charles Morgan Goodson, 86, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama died April 5, 2013. He was a member of the Vestavia Hills Baptist Church where he was formerly Chairman of the Deacons and a Sunday School teacher. A native of Collins, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lee Goodson. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Charles retired from BellSouth in 1987. He served as Vice President of the South Central Region of Telephone Pioneers of America and as well as past President of the Alabama Chapter of Telephone Pioneers of America. He worked for Southern Bell in Jackson, MS, and Atlanta, GA; for AT&T in New York and Washington, D.C.; at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ; and for BellSouth in Birmingham. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Mississippi and Alabama, a Life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of Vestavia Hills Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Charles was a director of Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts of America, the North Alabama Rehabilitation Center, and past President of the Vestavia Hills High School Band Boosters Club. He was a volunteer with the literacy program, Meals on Wheels, Tax-Aide of senior citizens, and Friends of Gaineswood.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Mary Whitfield Goodson, Vestavia Hills; one daughter, Mrs. Melinda DiBenedetto (Jack), Vestavia Hills; one son, Richard Goodson (Mandi), Huntsville. Survivors also include four grandchildren: Lauren Goodson, Christopher Goodson, Jenna Goodson, and Katie Howton Mantel (Sam).
Memorial services will be held at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church on April 9 at 10:30am. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Burial will be held at the National Cemetery in Montevallo.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any memorials be made to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. A special thanks goes to New Beacon Hospice and Helping Hands Services for their loving care and concern.
