Ben Wayne Gibson, Sr. was born on September 30, 1935 to Florence and Claris Y. Gibson, Sr. The family moved to Homewood in 1947 where he attended Edgewood Elementary and Shades Valley High School, graduating in 1954. He attended the University of Alabama and was a lifelong Bama fan of all sports. He was baptized at Mount Vernon UMC and was a long time member of Trinity UMC.
Ben retired as a painting contractor in 1996. He devoted many hours to Homewood Parks and Recreation as a lifeguard when the pool opened in 1954, and later as a volunteer youth basketball coach and 5-year member of the Homewood Park Board. He continued as a coach and scorekeeper years after his children were grown. He also served as clock keeper for Homewood Varsity football games. After retiring from painting, he was employed as a gym monitor for 16 years at Homewood Park where he loved greeting his "people."
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Dawn Lindsey Gibson; treasured daughter, Julie Gibson Halstead, her husband, Lt. Col. (Ret.) C. Brandon Halstead, Jr. and their children, Kathryn Kindall Halstead and Caleb B. Halstead III, all of Harrogate, UK; his son and best buddy Ben Wayne Gibson, Jr. of Homewood. Other loved ones are Dawn Hunter, Patti Rice, Mary Eggers, Daniel Eggers, Allison and Al Ward and their children: Jeremy, Joseph, Reade and Anne. Ben was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, C.Y. Gibson, Jr. and Gerald W. Gibson and his mother-in-law, Marguerite S. Lindsey.
