Patty Rae Campbell Barron, born March 10, 1923, departed this world on Friday, July 8, after an extended course with Alzheimer’s disease. She was an example of love and courage to all. Patty was the daughter of Thaniel Burn and Annabelle Campbell of Council, North Carolina. She was devoted wife of the late Noel D. Barron, Sr. for 67 years, with whom she is again reunited. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Andrew Durham of Atlanta, her sister, Marie Davis, her brothers, Mac Campbell, Neil Campbell, Paul Campbell, and Burke Campbell all of North Carolina.
Patty grew up in a farming community in Bladen county North Carolina. She graduated from Pineland College and was an elementary school and music teacher for several years. Patty moved to Wilmington, North Carolina to work in the shipyard during the war. She met and married Noel Douglas Barron Sr. in 1942. They moved to Chattanooga in 1945 where Patty was employed by BlueCross Insurance until the birth of her children. She was active in her church and community. She worked in the offices of both Mayors Pat Rose, and Robert Kirk Walker of Chattanooga. Patty also served as administrative assistant to the Headmistress at the Bright School. After Noel’s retirement they volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels to shut-ins throughout the Chattanooga community.
Even as her illness progressed, she retained all the selflessness, grace, beauty, and quiet strength that she exhibited throughout her life. She was above all things true to her Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ, until her death.
She will be greatly missed by her family, her friends, the congregation of Signal Mountain Baptist Church, and the staff at Alexian Brothers of Signal Mountain. Well done thou good and faithful servant.
She was a gentle and loving mother of Patti Durham of Macon, GA., Lora Long and Noel D. Barron, Jr., of Signal Mountain. She was a nurturing grandmother to Andrew and Joey Durham, Aaron, Scott, and Katherine Long, Anna, Mary and Rachel Barron and 6 great grandchildren. Patty leaves behind her brother Daniel Campbell of Ringgold, GA.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the North Chapel on Highway 153.
Graveside services for Pat will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Dr. Bill Dudley officiating.
The family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the staff at Alexian Brothers of Signal Mountain for their wonderful compassion and care. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
