She was born in Soddy, Tennessee on July 8, 1936, to Gladstone Sloan and Euna Bell Dodd. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1954.
She was employed with Sliger, Knowles & Holland, and Signal Knitting Mills before working at TVA where she later retired.
She was married to Ray Gravitt, the love of her life, for 55 years until his death in 2007.
Mary attended Red Bank Baptist Church and was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Ladies Oriental Shriners of North America and Alhambra Shrine Ladies Helping Hands. She loved ballroom dancing and the friendships she made. Mary’s greatest joy was her family, her grandchildren and great granddaughter.
Surviving are her three daughters, Sylvia (Bobby) Ward, Donna (Bobby) Morrison, Nancy (Eric) Witherspoon. Five grandchildren, Jason and Neal Joyner, Mary, Samuel, and Hugh Witherspoon and one great granddaughter, Jayla Joyner.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 13th at 10:30 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel with Rev. Bill Harvey officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 12th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at North Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alhambra Shriners Transportation Fund, 1000 Alhambra Drive, Chattanooga TN 37421 or Hearth Hospice, 513 Georgia Avenue, Chattanooga, 37403.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
