L. R. “Rube” Campbell of Hixson, Tennessee, died peacefully on March 6, 2013. Born in Old Washington, Tennessee, on December 12, 1915 to the late Tom and Minnie Campbell, Rube was the last surviving of thirteen children. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Beatrice Campbell and granddaughter, Misty Campbell. Rube is survived by sons, Tommy Campbell and Gary (Donna) Campbell; daughter, Denise (Joe) McGee; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A hero to his country and family, Rube was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy who proudly served aboard the U.S.S. Bunker Hill and survived the bombing attack on his aircraft carrier. He later served in the U. S. Naval Reserve. After his military service, Rube worked for DuPont and retired in 1976.
Rube was a member of Hixson First Baptist and later Falling Water Baptist. He was also active in the community through his membership in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Hixson and the Alhambra Shrine.
Keenly competitive, Rube was an accomplished athlete and skilled umpire. He coached local baseball teams, the DuPont Nylons softball team, and a championship Hixson Knothole baseball team.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday and 12-2 p.m. on Sunday at the North Chapel.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
