He was born, December 19, 1927, in Lancaster, Pa., son of the late Rev. Henry Seitz Musser and Maud Weaver Musser of Lancaster, Pa.
He was a graduate of East Hempfield Township High School in, Landisville, Pa. and was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marine having attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy followed by many miles of sea duty on several Merchant ships. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in, Lancaster, Pa. and held a B.S. Degree in Chemistry. He worked for E.I. Dupont de Nemours and Company for 34-years at five locations which included research, engineering and management assignments in atomic energy and textile fibers. Upon retiring from DuPont in 1985, he and his loving wife, Joan, developed the Oak Cove Shores Subdivision on Lake Chickamauga where they have lived and enjoyed their devoted family and friends. John had great love for his family and encouraged their best interests and aspirations.
He treasured the lake, the out-of-doors, was a lifelong boater, enjoyed woodworking, building, creating value and managing projects.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and served the Lutheran Church in different volunteer and leadership roles. He was an Emeritus Member of the American Chemical Society and a past chairman of the Chattanooga Section. He established the Oak Cove Shores Homeowners' Association and served as its president for over 17-years. He was a past president of the DuPont Elementary School PTA, was a member of the Chattanooga Association of Retired DuPonters and was a founding member of the Chickamauga Lake Property Owners Association. He was a charter member and past president of the Monday Mumblers Toastmasters Club, served as a Junior Achievement Advisor.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joan Fawber Musser; two daughters, Cynthia M. Painter of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee and Sharon M. Walker (Ronald P.) of Dunlap, Tennessee; three grandsons, John Clinton Walker (Kristina) of Dunlap, Tennessee, Cdr. Matthew D. Painter, USN, (Lindsey) of Virginia Beach, and Jonathan Musser of Chattanooga; three great grandsons, Jack N. Painter, Benjamin M. Painter of Virginia Beach and Barrett P. Walker of Dunlap, Tennessee.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Friday December 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:00 pm. John will be laid to rest in the Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors rendered by the United States Coast Guard Honor Team and the American Legion Post 95.
