Gene grew up in Concord, North Carolina and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Chemistry. After college graduation, he joined the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer and shortly thereafter became a jet fighter pilot. Upon leaving the Air Force, Gene joined Textile Rubber & Chemical Company in Dalton, GA, where he worked for over 40 years, retired as the VP of Research & Development and was affectionately known as “Doc”. Gene was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hixson, TN where he served in multiple functions, including many years as a Councilman of the Finance Committee.
Gene is preceded in death by his father, Marshall Edward Cline and mother, Gertrude Litaker Cline of Concord, North Carolina.
He is survived by his loving and caring sweetheart wife of 68 years, Laura Hatley Cline, son Mark Nolen Cline (Terri), daughter Beverly Jean Cline (Bonnie Amidon), grandson Matthew Nolen Cline (Emily), granddaughter Lauren Ashley Copeland (Clay) and great grandchildren Nathaniel James Copeland, Aubrey Grace Copeland, Wilson Nolen Cline and Harper Elizabeth Cline.
Funeral services will be conducted from the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 19th 2024, with Brother Alan Bradbury of Cleveland TN officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 pm until service time at North Chapel.
Memorial charitable contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga.
