Dorothy Mooney

Dorothy Marie Mooney, 95, of Red Bank died peacefully at the Alexian Brothers Valley Residence on Aug 4, 2015. She was born to May Rives and Leonard Jackson Martin, and raised in Booneville, Tennessee. She graduated from McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga. She was employed by the Fidelity Trust Co. and then married the love of her life, James L. Mooney, Jr., an award winning News Photographer, just as WW II was ending. Dot and Jim were married for 68 years. They always enjoyed living in their cozy log cabin called "Piney Nook". At home, she enjoyed Quilting, raising wild flowers, and collecting primitive antiques to decorate her Adirondack Camp Style home. She was a lifetime member and officer in the Daytona Garden Club where she excelled in Japanese style flower arrangements incorporating pottery made by local artists. Since moving to Chattanooga, she attended First Centenary United Methodist Church, where she and Jim were members of the YOMACO, then the Ault Pacesetters Sunday School Class. She enjoyed flower arranging and gardening for the church, and was a member of the Garden Mission and the Alter Guild. They enjoyed traveling around the country with their children, taking pictures for publication in travel magazines, then later, around the world just to enjoy the cultures.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jim; her two sisters Margaret Martin Warren and Hilda Ruth Pitts, both of Shelbyville TN; and her brother Thomas Edward Martin of Sheboygan Wisconsin. She is survived by her Daughter, Tina Mooney (David) Philpot of Dunwoody, GA; and her son, Richard Martin (Jan) Mooney of Soddy-Daisy. Dot will be missed by her grandchildren, Susan (Fred) Tilton of Corvallis, OR, Beth (Matt) Garrett of Valle Crucis, NC, Kristie Mooney (Jared) Magee of Soddy Daisy, Ted (Semra) Mooney of Rochester, NY, and Laura Mooney (Daniel) Hathaway of Atlanta; and great-grandchildren, Catherine and Madelyn Tilton, Will and Isabelle Garrett, Andrew and Ally Magee, Aleyna and Ricky Mooney, and Carter and Ethan Hathaway.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave, Chattanooga TN 37402. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Alexian Brothers Valley Residence for their loving care.

The Family will receive friends at First Centenary United Methodist Church in Chattanooga on Friday at 9:00 am at the Narthex, with funeral services to follow at 9: 30 am at the Kate Lyle West Chapel with Dr. David Harr officiating. The burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 10:30 am.
