Dorothy Dean was a graduate of Soddy Daisy High School and Valedictorian of her class. She received her Bachelor degree from the University of Chattanooga. She spent her career as a mathematician at Tennessee Valley Authority in the Transmission Planning and Engineering Division, retiring in 1984. She was an officer in the TVA Engineering Association.
Dorothy Dean was a member of Phi Mu sorority. In 1962, she was awarded “Outstanding Alumna of the Year” by the University of Chattanooga Panhellenic Association. She was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and served as President of the Chattanooga Branch and State president of the Tennessee Division. Dorothy Dean has long been a generous financial supporter of many charitable causes. Her most notable, recent contribution was the establishment of the Dorothy Dean Shelton Mathematics Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) in December of 2004. She was a member of the Judge David Campbell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she served as Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, and Parliamentarian. A lifetime member of the Soddy Presbyterian Church, now the First Presbyterian Church of Soddy Daisy, she served as Deacon, Elder Emeritus, Youth Director, Junior Choir Director, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, officer in the Women of the Church, and member of the choir. She served on the board of Directors of the Soddy Presbyterian Cemetery Association.
She is survived by three first cousins, Mary Katherine Newberry Bowles, Nashville, TN, Ann Newberry Wirz, Beaufort, SC, and William “Bill” H. Newberry (Judy), Soddy Daisy. She is also survived by Chris Newberry, spouse of her deceased cousin, Thomas Warren Newberry, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, November 10, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 1 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home chapel with Reverend Mark Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Soddy Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Soddy Daisy, P.O. Box 0009, Soddy Daisy, TN 37384.
