Just as in life, David managed to clear up the loose ends between the end of deer season and before those spring turkeys gobbled. One month shy of his 80th birthday, he passed away on February 3, 2022.
David was born in Charleston, WV on March 13, 1942 and moved to Oak Ridge, TN at the age of two where his Dad was employed with Union Carbide during the Manhattan Project. Growing up in Oak Ridge was a childhood like no other and David enjoyed every minute. He was the outdoors man from his first step and cherished the lifelong friends who help create his wonderful memories.
Books were not his favorite part of school, but he enjoyed the sports, and participated playing football at Jefferson Jr. High and for the Oak Ridge Wildcats coached by Jack Armstrong for whom the stadium is named. For the last 51 years, he has been married to that coach’s daughter, Sally Armstrong Cook.
He was a proud member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 43, Chattanooga, Tennessee for 47 plus years as a pipefitter/welder. He worked a lot of long shifts and out of town jobs, but that never kept him from participating in his son’s activities whether in school or scouting. Many weekends, he got home from work, reloaded his truck and took off for scouting adventures assisting the leader. His son, Jonathan Cook of Dallas, Texas is a proud Eagle Scout with fond memories of those adventures.
David was a loving, devoted husband and father and never wavered. He shared his love for the outdoors with Sally by giving her a fly rod for their first Valentine’s Day. She became avid and they spent hours on Chickamauga, as well as the local trout streams.
He is survived by his sisters in law, Virginia “Ginny” Cook (Jim) and Nancy Armstrong, St. Augustine, Florida, nephews, Tommy Gelsomino, Jim Cook and nieces, Cathy Herd King and Jennifer Cook, along with numerous other nieces and nephews.
Family services will be held at a later date and there will be no visitation.
