Robert Louis Hoover passed away peacefully at home Sept. 1, 2024. He was born in High Point on Sept. 14, 1931, to Clyde and Audrey Hoover, the fourth child of 6. After Bob graduated from High Point Central in 1950, he worked for Old Dominion Trucking for many years. He knew he wanted a career in electronics which led him to attend night school. Once he graduated, he opened Bob’s TV sales and services in 1968, expanding it to include appliance sales in the late 1970’s. His white van with Here Comes Bob painted across the front was a familiar sight in High Point for many years.
With the encouragement of his wife Joanne, he obtained his residential/commercial builders license in 1980 and began Robert L Hoover Construction Company developing Milbourn Place subdivision in Oakview and several commercial sites in High Point, finishing with Emerywood Park Office complex in the late 80’s. When his beloved wife Joanne passed away in 2016, he named one of the buildings The Joanne Building. During the late 90’s Bob & Joanne decided to retire Bob’s TV so they could spend more time with their six grandchildren. Their unwavering dedication to the education and careers of these young people remained a priority throughout their lives. After Joanne passed in 2016, Bob continued an annual summer vacation to Myrtle Beach and always loved a trip to Brook Green Gardens to honor his wife Joanne, who loved going there.
A love of sports kept Bob active until his late 80’s as he enjoyed skiing, running, and tennis. He even accepted the position of tennis coach at Trinity High School 2013-2015. Bob was known to all who knew him as an aviation enthusiast. He obtained his pilot’s license in the 1950’ s and spent the rest of his life attending air shows throughout the country and was finally able to meet his much-admired hero, pilot Chuck Yeager (who’s wingman was also named Bob Hoover). Bob was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his brothers Charles, & Jimmy, and two sisters Lib, & Martha.
He leaves behind three children Janet (Kelly) Ellington, Bobby (Sara) Hoover, & Elisabeth Pruitt, six grandchildren: Lecia Kolaszewski, Courtney Fletcher, Chelsea Eikenberg, Coulter Pruitt, Chase Pruitt, & Haley Hoover, and 10 great grandchildren. The family is very thankful to their sister Beth Hoover Pruitt for the 12 years of caretaking she provided to both Bob and Joanne during their latter years.
A Celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 in the Chapel of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church by Rev. Dr. Jeff Patterson and Rev. Glenn Myers. The family will receive friends following the service in the Asbury Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bob’s favorite charity St. Jude Children's Hospital or to Wesley Memorial Church.
