Richard was a quick-witted individual who thrived on one-liners, bringing joy and humor to those around him. He was a devoted husband to Beverly H. Kemp, and together they shared a journey of love and companionship since their marriage in December 1962.
Richard earned a Bachelor's Degree from Lenoir Rhyne and a Master's Degree from East Carolina University. His passion for football led to a remarkable college career, where he achieved numerous accolades, including being named N.A.I.A All-American in 1961 and 1962, Associated Press All-American in 1962, and receiving the Kirkland Blocking Trophy in 1962. Rickard was not only a Conference Most Valuable Player in 1961 but also held impressive career records in rushing, passing, and points.
Participating in three National Championship games and achieving a remarkable college record of 40 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties, Richard left an indelible mark on the football field. His dedication extended to coaching, where he garnered seven Conference Championships, three State Championships, and was named NC High School Coach of the Year in 1974. As the only Southeast Guilford High School coach to go undefeated in the state playoffs, Richard’s coaching prowess was undeniable.
Transitioning to the college level, Richard contributed to the NC State Football Coaching Staff from 1975 to 1977 and the Duke University Football Coaching Staff from 1977 to 1979. His commitment and service were recognized with the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award.
Beyond his achievements, Richard found solace in his favorite hobby, golf. He leaves behind cherished memories and will be dearly missed by his wife Beverly, sons Rick and wife Martha and Cecil and wife Lisa, and his four grandchildren Emma, Jake, Luke, and Sadie.
