Helen Weavil Starnes, 102, passed away on Friday January 5, 2018, in Lenoir, NC. She was born in Davidson County, NC, on June 12, 1915, to the late Ernest E. and Vada Hastings Weavil. In 1933 she married Ralph Odell Starnes, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son, Walter Byron Starnes, and daughter-in-law, Georgia Farmer Starnes, of High Point. Helen was from a large family and had experienced the passing of eight of her beloved siblings.
A resident of High Point since 1933, she was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she especially loved the prayer shawl ministry. A talented artist, she also enjoyed her painting and needlework. She appreciated and found meaning in the small things in life and conveyed these values to her children. Helen could always find the positive in any situation. She dedicated her entire life to her family, and she will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Pat McEachern, and son-in-law, Ted, of Hickory, NC; four grandchildren, Sally Bentley (Keith) of Hickory, NC, Ed McEachern of Atlanta, GA, Amy McEachern (Alice) of Oakland, CA, Ann Reece (Jordan) of High Point, NC; nine great-grandchildren, Becky Stokes (Rex) of Wake Forest, NC, Matt Bentley (Allie Rae) of Hickory, NC, Taylor McEachern (Stacey) of Braselton, GA, Helen McEachern of Braselton, GA, Walt Reece (Megan) of Winston-Salem, NC, Harrison Reece of Atlanta, GA, Josh Neff of Oakland, CA, Sara Neff Minahan (Ryan) of Oakland, CA, Hilary Neff of Knoxville, TN; and two great-great grandchildren, Hunter and Olivia McEachern of Braselton, GA. She is also survived by one brother, James Weavil of Winston-Salem, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the loving and compassionate staff of Shaire Center Rest and Nursing Home in Lenoir, NC, for their devotion to Helen’s care this past fall and winter.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held Monday, January 15, at 11 a.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in the chapel, officiated by the Rev. Jared Stine. Visitation will follow the service in the Asbury Room of the church.
