Donald Marvin Mills, 91, passed away on May 17, 2024 at the VA Hospital in Salisbury, NC surrounded by family. Donald was born March 5, 1933 to the late Marvin Ezra and Ola Mae Mills in Bedford County, Virginia.
Upon graduating from Jefferson High School in Roanoke Virginia, Donald joined the Air Force and served from 1951-1955. He was an avid baseball player and was asked to spring training camp by Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles, but God had other plans. Donald began his career in the plumbing and heating industry, working for Hajoca Corporation and then Crane Supply. His favorite activities in his later years were watching the Atlanta Braves and watching old westerns.
Donald met the Lord in the summer of 1951, just before he was deployed overseas with the Air Force. Donald married his wife Darlene on August 11, 1956. He served in numerous church roles such as choir leader and treasurer. He performed in numerous trios, quartets and duets at Fellowship Baptist, Roanoke, VA; Bible Baptist, Roanoke, VA; Bible Baptist, Greensboro, NC; and Victory Baptist, Greensboro, NC. Donald served alongside Darlene in every church they attended. When the doors of the church were open, they were there serving Our Lord.
In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by granddaughter Ashley Renee Mountcastle Mills and sister Dorothy Mills .
Donald is survived by his wife Darlene Mills; daughter, Vivian Denise Mills; son, Teddy Mills; granddaughters, Jessica Mills, Amanda Leigh Szamier, and Emily Denise Szamier; close friends Karen Ciesielski, Chloris and Dale Storer, and Don and Edna Slone.
A Celebration of Donald’s Life will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 12 p.m.in the Chapel of Sechrest-Davis Funerals and Cremations, 976 Phillips Ave, High Point, NC, officiated by Rev. Paul Doby and Rev. Chris Kendrick. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
