Born April 17, 1943, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late William Herman Mitchell and Winnie Faye Lackey. Jerry retired as Captain of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department with 30 years of exemplary service. Through his career he made lifelong friends and was cherished by all who knew him. Through his hard work he provided a wonderful life for his family who are forever grateful and proud. His family and community were fortunate to have had the Rock. He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Lafone Mitchell of the home; son, William Darren Mitchell of Hickory; daughter, Viveca M. Huffman and husband, Stan of Hickory; grandson, Mitchell D. Ward of Hickory; granddaughters, Logan E. Ward of Hickory, Kadee E. Huffman of Hickory; and two special pet boys, Yogi and Rocky. He is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Gail (Snail) Lynch. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Springs Road Baptist Church in Hickory. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Springs Road Baptist Church, with Rev. Ben Rowe officiating.
