Son of Xia Fong Xiong and Ying Lee, Larry was born on May 2, 1952 in Tuam Puv Xam Loj, Laos. He is the third oldest of 15 children. After graduating high school in 1967, he worked as a teacher’s assistant at Boumlong High School. He graduated with teaching credentials in 1971 and taught at Dong Dor College in Vientiane, Laos. During his time as a teacher, he left a lasting impression on the lives of many young men.
After the Vietnam War, like all Hmong families trying to flee persecution, Larry, his wife, and daughter were able to seek safety in Nongkhai, Thailand and eventually relocated to Vinai refugee camp awaiting petition to the United States of America. In 1978, he and his family arrived in Denver, CO.
After moving to Merced, CA, Larry returned to school where he completed two years at Merced Community College in their Landscaping and Horticulture program. He spent over 10 years volunteering at Merced Lao Family Inc., providing free services to the local community. For many years, he also worked closely with the late General Vang Pao advocating for the Hmong community. He relocated to Morganton in 1996 where he ultimately retired in 2017 from Valdese Weavers.
Larry was a devoted family man. He spent many years bringing family members over to the States from Laos. He was a hardworking, generous, supportive husband and father. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He spent his later years raising chickens, hunting squirrels, and traveling all over to visit family.
He is predeceased by his father, mother, and brothers, Lia, Kou, Yeng and Choua.
He is survived by his wife Song; children, Pa (Drew), Vameng (Song), Lee (Yeng), Chee, Sai (Megan), and Kabao; grandchildren, Sam, Angel, Noah, Kaydence, Hero, Gibson, Calvin, Justice, Abigail, Chase, Hunter, Olivia, Xander, Logan, Owen and Grace; brothers Lee, Peng, Tommy and Xeng and sisters Ma, Yer, Shoua, Sia, Cho and Sheng.
Larry was a man of few words with the biggest heart. He was thoughtful with his words and actions, always there to lend a helping hand and respected by so many in the community. His love is unconditional and unwavering. We will forever miss you…
Funeral Services will begin on Friday, November 22, 2024 and will continue through Sunday, November 24 at Drum Funeral Home in Hickory. The graveside service will be Sunday at Burke Memorial Park in Morganton.
