HICKORY---James Russell Pope, 84, passed away February 28, 2016 at Trinity Village. James was born May 4, 1931 in Catawba Co. to the late Thomas Garland and Artie Mae Benfield Pope. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four sisters, Georgia Ruth Day, Annie Laura Lowman, Jo Ann Holsclaw and Martha Pope Brittain and a brother, Thomas Q. E. Pope. James was a member of East Hickory Baptist Church, retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture and was a veteran of the U. S. Army served in Germany during WW 11. James was a member of the American Legion Post #48 for over 50 years served as commander, served on the Fair board for many years and also served on the honor guard for over 25 years. Surviving is his wife, Peggy McIntosh Pope; sons, Russell Pope and wife, Vickey of Claremont and Timothy Pope and wife, Candace of Hickory; granddaughters, Kaylee Cutler and husband, Jamie of Mebane, NC and Kourtney Pope of Lenoir; grandson, Christian Pope of Lenoir; sister, Freda Pope Bolick of Hickory and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at 11:00 A. M. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kathy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.
