He was born September 2, 1936 in Catawba County to the late Margaret Rhyne Hill and the late Harold Wilson Hill. Dean was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hickory. He was a 4-year Veteran of the US Navy, stationed in the Philippines and retired at 77 with 35 years of service as a postal employee/letter carrier from the Hickory Post Office.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother Helen Hill, his twin brother, Carroll “Gene” Hill and a very special Aunt and Uncle, Mary and Gus Ellis “Slim” Baucom, who helped raise him after his mother passed away soon after childbirth.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Margaret Huffman Hill; daughter Pamela Hill Crump, grandson Derek Crump and wife Chloe, grandchildren, Emery Rose and Camden Dean Crump; daughter Deanie Owens and husband Ronald, grandchildren Frankie Edwards, Chad Edwards and Amanda Burt, great grandchildren Ethan, Tyler and Ashlynn Edwards, Carol Ann, Hallie and Logan Burt and, great great grandson Waylon Clements, thus making 5 generations until his death. His sister Brenda Hill Huffman (Larry) and a number of nieces and nephews also survive him.
Dean enjoyed traveling with Margaret, visiting 11 different countries. He was active in the American Legion, Hickory Moose Lodge and Branch 1250 of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He loved playing cribbage with special friends, maintained his own yardwork, crossword puzzles, reading and watching old TV shows and car racing. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends.
Dean Hill’s service of remembrance will be held, Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Seaman officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2166 35th Avenue Drive NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
