Novella Carol Hargett passed away on December 19, 2024. She was born on March 5, 1938 in Quitman, Arkansas to Carroll and Opal Hargett. She lived on the family farm until 1944, when she and her mother joined her father in Phoenix, Arizona. Both parents took jobs in the aviation industry in Phoenix to support the war effort. In 1947, the family moved to Henderson, where Novella attended the public schools, graduating from Basic High School in 1956. She attended the University of Nevada in Reno, where she majored in U.S. history and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught in Zephyr Cove, on Lake Tahoe for a year before returning to Henderson.
Subsequently, Novella taught U.S. history for many years in Clark County School District. She taught at Western High School, Vo-Tech High School and Bonanza High School. She always found ways to teach creatively to engage her students and make history come alive. At Western, she served as faculty advisor to the cheerleading squad, driving the cheerleaders to training camps and out-of-town events, having fun for everyone. She retired in 1990 after 30 years of teaching. Her passion for US history extended to her love of small dogs, especially cairn terriers, two of whom she named Linc and Prez because they were born near Presidents’ Day.
Following her retirement, Novella enjoyed traveling, including a cruise to Alaska and many trips to visit extended family in Arkansas. She was socially active, frequently hosting holiday dinners and parties for family and friends. She provided ongoing support to her parents until their deaths.
Novella was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Lyle Hargett; and her sister Mary Ann Weeks. She is survived by her brother Gary, of Portland, Oregon; a nephew Don E. Weeks (Debbie) of Henderson; a grandnephew Donald R. Weeks (Danie) of Henderson; and a grandniece Opal Raeann Nelson (Tate) of Henderson. She is also survived by her good friends in the Harper family, Jimmy Harper, Jimmy Harper, Jr. and Marla Gonzalez. They provided Novella ongoing support and companionship for 14 years, especially during including the time of her final illness.
Arrangements are through Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Viewing will be Monday, December 30, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., service at 1:00 p.m., burial at 2:00 p.m.
