James John Nagy, a sweet and kind man, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 15, 2020 at the age of 96, after a brief illness. James was pre-deceased by his wife of 56 years, Doris Jeanette Atkinson Nagy, and his parents, Eugene and Elizabeth Nagy.
Born in East Chicago, Indiana on August 24, 1924, James grew up in “the Harbor” during the Great Depression. He was quoted on several occasions as saying, “You can take the boy out of the Harbor, but you can never take the Harbor out of the man.” During WWII, James proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he received a Purple Heart. Upon returning from the war, James married his soulmate Doris in 1946, and together they raised a family in Griffith, Indiana.
James leaves behind his favorite sister, Rosie; and brother-in-law, Pete Rodriguez of Venice, Florida, and his three sons: Brian James Nagy of Henderson, Nevada; Kevin Michael Nagy of Boulder City, Nevada; Mark Gerard Nagy and daughter-in-law Leslie of Southbury, Connecticut.
James was a loving grandfather to his 10 grandchildren: Keith, Kyle, Noel, Joshua, Steven, Brianna, Ashley, Brody, Lily and Gannon. He also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; and 5 nephews: Shawn, Murray, Scott and Cary Pierce, and Peter Rodriguez Jr. He was blessed with the loving care of his “special angel” – his grandson Kyle’s lovely wife, Theresa. She made his later years special in so many ways, and our entire family is so fortunate to call her one of our own.
A longtime resident of Griffith, Indiana, James retired in 1979 as a Foreman at Inland Steel. Upon his retirement, he and Doris relocated with lifelong friends, to Boulder City, Nevada to finally enjoy the warmth and sunshine of the West. A kind and humble man, James enjoyed spending time with family and friends. After being Cubs fan for 92 years, he was thrilled to finally see them win the World Series. He loved watching softball, playing cards and bingo, and was a passionate walleye fisherman. As a regular at Railroad Pass, Jim was well known and loved.
Pops always ended a phone conversation with “Give everyone a kiss from me.” He will be dearly missed by all whose lives were touched by his faith-filled spirit and infectious smile.
Memorial and burial services will be announced in the coming spring. The entire Nagy family would like to thank you for your support and condolences.
