DearTulin,  I worked with Rick at Little Rock AFB.  He was an outstanding Security Policeman who had a deep love for two things.  You and the country he served.  I used to pick on him about bringing you all the way here from The Duck, but I admired the love you shared.   I was proud to know you both and to serve with Rick.  He will be truley missed.

Ricky was like a father to us as young troops in the 824th at Moody AFB.  He was one of the few NCO's that we could approach with any situation and get an honest answer or advice without repercussions.  He was a sponge that somehow soaked up every bit of knowledge around him and could teach the "un-teachable", never giving up on those who did not perform at the top of the class.  As I write this message I remember a time in Pakistan where I almost burned down a thermal imaging station covered with a tent.  We had a diesel fired furnace that I got bored and had to "mess" with.  Ricky dropped by my post as usual to check on me and see if I had found any of his favorite MRE treats, and noticed a section of the wood flooring charred and a fire extinguisher expended.  Instead of tearing into me, he asked me if I learned anything; to which I responded yes sir I sure did.  He then said, well I guess we need to get this place cleaned up.  He somehow found new flooring and another fire extinguisher in the middle of Pakistan when we didn't even have showers or real food.  He realized that everybody makes a mistake, and instead of harping on it, he helped them to move on and become a better person.  I am honored to have known you, and honored to have learned from you; I find great comfort knowing that we will meet again and won't need body armor to shoot the breeze.  I asked Msgt Bellini to say goodbye for me tomorrow but in my own way I already have.

My condolences to Ricky's family.  Ricky and I were stationed at Barksdale AFB for our first assignments as Law Enforcement troops many years ago.  We both started careers in the Air Force and I have many wonderful memories of working the gates with him in Shreveport.  God has a special place for the peacekeepers.

My best memory was when MSgt Melancon and his wife invited myself and another friend of mine over for dinner while we all were stationed at barksdale...... The food was great!!! I learned that day how humble he was and how much he loved his family...... You will be missed but not forgotten.......

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another. 

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Ricky J. Melancon our “Brother-in-Arms”.   To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Ricky.   And to Ricky it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operation Desert Storm while serving in the U.S. Air Force.  Ricky, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction.  You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country.  We bid you a sad farewell.  You will be dearly missed from among our ranks.  Be at Ease.  Rest in Peace.

Tulin, I am really unsure of what to say.  The Sheriff believed in me and his love of law enforcement and training became my love of law enforcement and training.
