Nicholas Henry Mammarelli, Jr. was born November 16, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee to Nicholas and Mary Stella Mammarelli. He died February 27, 2024 in Shreveport, Louisiana after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerry; and daughter, Pam Cothard. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Eloise; son, Mark and his wife, Debora; daughter, Lisa Gray and her husband, Rusty; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The two great loves of his life were his wife and the United States Air Force. He served his country honorably for 25 years, after which he worked for 20 more years at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center serving his fellow veterans.
Everyone who knew "Buddy" loved him; he never met a stranger. He enjoyed visiting with his military buddies reminiscing about adventures during his years of travel in the USAF. He also enjoyed bowling, pinochle, and admiring all sorts of military aircraft. As he sat on his front porch, he could identify airplanes simply from the sound of their engines! Every trip to the commissary would require a drive down Hangar Line Road. One of his favorite pastimes was watching the annual airshow at Barksdale Air Force Base. And, as you might expect, one of his favorite movies was TORA, TORA, TORA!
Nick was a devout Catholic having earned the designation of 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He and Eloise were faithful members of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bossier City. Each Friday during Lent they could always be found at the weekly fish fry chatting with their many friends. He will be missed by so many.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to our treasured friends, Malcolm and Kay McAbee, for their love and care for Nick and Eloise especially during these past few years.
In lieu of flowers. memorials may be made to Catholic Charities of North Louisiana or Alzheimer's Association. Or, as a tribute to Nick's example, extend kindness to your fellow man.
A visitation for Nicholas will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home & Park, 601 Highway 80 East, Haughton, Louisiana 71037, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM.
