Services for Mr. Smith will be at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, LA. Visitation will be Friday, January 12, 2024, at 3 pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 4 pm with Dr. Gevan Spinney presiding.
Garvis was born on December 7, 1946, in Genoa, AR. He graduated from Genoa Central High School. After two years of college at Southern State (SAU) Garvis joined the United States Air Force where he retired after 20 years of service as a Master Sergeant. He then worked for the United States Postal Service for 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, as well as cooking, and caring for his dog Dixie. Garvis spent most of his time with his family outdoors working and enjoying his farm, where many memories were shared and created.
Garvis was preceded in death by his parents George Theodore Smith and Alvie Cates Smith; wife Carol Rainwater Smith of 49 years; siblings George Allen Smith, Charles Smith, Billy Rae Crowder, Elvis Baker, and Bitsie Burns.
Garvis is survived by his sons: Gary Smith and wife Diane of Haughton, LA; Greg Smith of Omaha, NE; grandsons: Trevor Smith and Carter Smith of Trophy Club, TX; Hunter Nesbitt and Kaitlin of McKinney, TX.; Hayden Nesbitt and Hesten Nesbitt of Haughton, LA; great grandson Levi of McKinney, TX.; bonus family Nanette, Bre and Kerrigan Welch, along with many extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials may be made to The Arc Caddo-Bossier’s GREAT program (Great Results Equine-Assisted Therapies) Greenwood, LA or a charity of their choice.
