Tanya Alma Slaughter, the daughter of the late Jessie Slaughter and the late Joseph Bruce Johnston, was born on May 16, 1950 in Harrisburg PA.
She received her education from the former John Harris Senior High School, was a proud “pioneer” and majored in child care. After graduation she was employed at the former Harrisburg state hospital, assisted her brother Charles Slaughter in the former Lewis & Slaughter’s bar, later moving on and completing a 25-year career with the PA State Department of Revenue as a Clerk III/Supervisor. Tanya was known to her family as “tan brown” and affectionally known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren.
She was a powerful presence—strong, fierce, unafraid to speak her mind, with a sharp sense of humor, she could bring laughter to any situation, even in tough times. She was very good at baking and cooking. Tanya took great pride in providing personal care for her beloved mother, Jessie. She was of strong Christian faith, an avid fan of the LA Lakers and Dallas Cowboys. She loved listening to music, watching her favorite shows and chatting on the phone. Her loyalty, courage, wit, advice and unshakeable spirit left an unforgettable mark on everyone. Her legacy lives on in the laughter, encouragement and strength she shared.
On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Tanya Alma Slaughter, at age 74, peacefully transitioned into eternal life, at the Hershey Medical Center, with her devoted son, grandson and daughter-in-law present. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Terry Lee and Jodi Ann Slaughter and four brothers, Eugene “Dog”, Charles “Rabbit”, Leonard “Snake” Slaughter and Barry “Buck” P. Johnston. Tanya leaves her only child, son Troy J. Slaughter Sr, (Renee) and three beloved grandchildren, Tanajsia, Troy Jr. and Talaya Slaughter to celebrate her life and cherish shared memories. Tanya has two surviving sisters, Lucretia Thompson (Albert), Tonia Morton and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Throughout Tanya’s life she enjoyed helping others even putting their needs before her own. She is and will be deeply missed but never, ever forgotten. In keeping with Tanya’s wishes, no funeral service or repast be held. A limited private interment has been completed at Mount Moriah Cemetery. Arrangements by Cremation & Burial Society of Pennsylvania Funeral Home.
