Stephen J. “Butch” Matlock, 71, passed away February 28 at Carolyn’s House, Hospice Of Central Pa, where his family had been with him in his final days, assisted by the extraordinary compassion and care of Dr. Maria Olender.
Steve was born on July 21, 1948 in Harrisburg, to Stephen and Lillian Boova Matlock. At the age of two months, Steve lost his father in a tragic, work-related accident at Central Iron and Steel in Harrisburg. Lillian Matlock then married David Smith, and together they raised Steve in a wonderful family, along with two siblings.
Steve was predeceased by his parents and stepfather, and is survived by his son, Brandon J. Matlock (Tracy) of Mechanicsburg; two grandchildren, Brett and Kara Matlock; his sister Susann Crawford and his brother, David Smith, both of Harrisburg; a niece, a nephew and numerous cousins.
He attended Bishop McDevitt High School, and was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a Combat Medic in a M.A.S.H Unit. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service and Matlock Driving School. Steve was inspired by his stepfather in his love of sports, and he became a skilled athlete. He excelled in baseball at the amateur level in the Harrisburg area, including the Twilight League. He was also an avid bowler, having rolled two 300 games, a spirited golfer, and in later years, he liked to play poker. He enjoyed watching sports, as well, and he and his brother David attended many home basketball and football games at Bishop McDevitt. Steve also loved to listen to music and watch films, and had a collection of over 1,000 CDs and DVDs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Paxton Road, Harrisburg, Thursday, March 5, at 11:00 am. A visitation will be held an hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carolyn’s House, 1701 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, 17110.
