Jennie Esther Ross

Jennie was born October 14, 1925 in Cherryville Pennsylvania. Jennie was the

daughter of Andrew and Carrie (Yorty) Zimmerman. She attended a small, red, tworoom

school house until the seventh grade, or as she would say, she “attended

Cherryville University.” Due to the Great Depression, Jennie, and many of her fifteen

siblings, ventured into work rather than remaining in school, to support their family after

the loss of their father in 1934. Later in life, Jennie attended Harrisburg Barber School

and became a licensed barber. She was a partner in numerous barber shops in the

Harrisburg area.

Surviving are her son, Harry H. Rupp of Port Royal, Pa, daughter, Marie (Rupp)

Readinger and Husband, Joe, of Williamstown, Pa., grandson, Jim Withelder and

granddaughters, Crystal (Withelder) Ochs and Christie (Rupp) Sorkin. Surviving greatgrandchildren

include: Andrew Ochs, Billy Ochs, Justin Withelder, Zachary Withelder,

Michael Withelder, Oliver Withelder, Samantha (Withelder) Kleinfelter, Cassidy Sorkin,

Annika Sorkin, Lynn (Withelder) Slakoper, Ashley (Withelder) Shiffer. Surviving greatgreat-

grandchildren include: Alex Withelder, Keira Withelder, Kolin Long, Alison Shiffer,

Eva Shiffer, Quinn Slakoper, Ethan Slakoper, Connor Stitcher, Chase Stitcher, Reese

Kleinfelter, Riley Withelder as well as abundant nieces and nephews and of course,

“Critter”, her border collie buddy, that watched Wheel of Fortune with her every night.

Jennie was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold H. Rupp and her second

husband, Lloyd A Ross, three grandchildren; Anne Withelder, Harry Withelder, Paul

Withelder Jr., Brothers; Clayton, Edwin, Roy, Ralph, Warren, Howard, Andrew, Sisters;

Beulah, Alma, Florence, Edna, Bertha, Lucy, Miriam and Anna.

Jennie was so proud of her large family and becoming a great-great-grandmother. She

enjoyed attending every family member’s activities she was included in such as her

grandchildrens’ baseball, football, band, chorus, dancing and racing events. Jennie,

herself, enjoyed embroidery, traditional quilting, crocheting, traveling, reading,

gardening and baking. She was a member of the Busy Bee’s at Lawn Evangelical

Congregational Church where she contributed many of her hand-made crafts to their

annual craft fair. In recent years, she enjoyed crocheting lap robes to donate to local

churches, nursing homes and relatives. Jennie was also a member of the Order of the

Eastern Star, Hershey chapter 509.

Pastor William Stoffel will officiate the memorial service on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 11 am at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 54 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, PA 17003. Anyone attending the service Please arrive at the cemetery behind the Main office building by 10:45 am to form a funeral procession.
