George H. “Shorty” Price, born on August 15, 1920 in Somerton, Arizona, passed away on November 3, 2012. George retired from the Hanford Police Department in 1975 as a detective sergeant after serving as a law enforcement officer for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the war, George joined the Solano County, CA, Sheriff’s department as a deputy and returned to Hanford in 1961.
After retiring, George worked as a bailiff for Kings County and he and his wife Betty continued to live out his passion for public service as volunteer campground hosts at Shaver and Huntington lakes in California and Lake Sacajawea in Washington State. During his life, George always had additional jobs and activities, including, in his teen years, serving as the first Western Union delivery boy in Hanford, and working at the Wilton Hotel in housekeeping.
He is survived by his dear pet and companion, Maggie, his daughter Lynda Nutt of Post Falls, ID, his son Ronald Price of Bellingham, WA, his son Richard Price of Walla Walla, WA, and a step-son Lawrence Taylor, of Rock Hill, SC, along with 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Shannon of Visalia, his brother Donald Price of Sacramento, his brother Gene Price of Porterville, and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents Christopher and Ida Mae Price, his wife Betty, his daughters Pattijean Duplechin, Shirley Ann Price, and Sharon Cruz, a brother Ray Price, and two sisters, Geraldine Nicholson and Pauline Cantrell.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at People’s Funeral Chapel with Hanford Police Department Honor Guard; 501 N. Douty Street, Hanford, CA 93230 559-584-5591 with a Graveside at Grangeville Cemetery at a later date.
