Shawn retired from the US Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 22 and a half years of service. He received many accolades, including a Joint Service Achievement Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, and Air Force Good Conduct Medal with six devices.
He is preceded in rest by his wife of 42 years, Cathy Atwell. He is survived by his son, James Atwell (Victoria); granddaughter, Isabel Atwell; brothers: Kyle Atwell and Leigh Atwell; and sisters: Arlene Smith and Sherry Atwell-Linteau.
The family will welcome friends on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 1:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. Interment with military honors will take place on Monday, February 24, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery: 5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434.
