She was born in Pulaski County, Virginia (now Radford, Virginia) on May 21, 1928 to Etta Sue Duncan Robertson and Roy Miller Robertson. In her youth she lived in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and several other states, before coming to Norfolk, Virginia in 1939 with her parents. Peggy was a 1948 graduate of Maury High School and was a member of the sorority Alpha Nu Phi. She married her high school sweetheart Thomas I. Miller on May 20, 1949. She had a short banking career before having her children, Dail and Winifred. She and her husband moved to Hampton in 1957 and made it their home for over 60 years. Peggy moved to The Chesapeake Retirement Community in Newport News, Virginia in September 2018 after her husband's death.
Peggy was an avid reader and bridge player and was active in 8 bridge groups. She was also a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Foxhill and the Wednesday Morning Circle.
She belonged to The Daughters of the American Revolution, Estrella Chapter, and the Junior Woman's Club of Hampton before graduating up to The Woman's Club of Hampton. She served as president from
1993-1995 of The Woman's Club of Hampton and was influential in starting the Evening division to accommodate those who worked. Peggy and Tom enjoyed travel during the course of their marriage and visited Canada, Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Greece, Mexico, China, Germany, England, The Netherlands, Ireland, France, Belgium, Colombia, and a Panama Canal cruise.
They also traveled across the USA four times and visited all fifty states. Their last trip together was to Alaska. They enjoyed a very active social life together with many friends and family. Peggy loved a good party and to entertain over the years. She loved a good martini or glass of wine and always had to have a Coca-Cola at 10 am every day. She especially loved Christmas, having as many as three decorated Christmas trees in her home over the holiday season.
Peggy was a loving mother and wife. She was predeceased by a stillborn son, Robert, and her
loving husband, Thomas Ivy Miller, of 69 years.
Peggy leaves behind her son Dail Brant Miller and wife Denise Rousseau of Santa Fe, New Mexico, her daughter Winifred Miller Francis and husband, Dr. Scott H. Francis of Hampton, Virginia, her granddaughters Natasha Irina Miller of Wilmington, Delaware and Courtney Dail Francis of Knoxville, Tennessee. She also leaves behind her sister Violet Robertson Forrest and her husband Dr. Robert G.
Forrest of Washington, Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews that she was so very fond of.
The family of Peggy Robertson Miller would like to thank all of the staff that tended to her needs while she resided at The Chesapeake Retirement Community. A special thank you to Marie, Cherise and Saundra who always brought a smile to her face and made her look pretty in her final years in healthcare.
Inurnment will be private for the immediate family only. A celebration of life service will be held at the Mausoleum at Parklawn Memorial Park on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes those to donate to The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, First United Methodist Church of Foxhill, and or their favorite charity or simply have a Coca Cola at 10 am in her memory.
