Joseph Anthony “Tony” Sayago, born on July 7, 1938, in Vigo, Spain, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. At the age of nine, Tony immigrated to the United States in 1947, beginning a journey that defined a remarkable life of service, love, and dedication.
In 1958, Tony proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force on November 28, answering the call to serve his adopted country. Over the course of a distinguished 26-year career, he served in four campaigns throughout the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star for his bravery and commitment to duty.
In 1962, Tony married the love of his life, Heidelore Ueck, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned 62 years. The following year, they welcomed their daughter, Vivian Rose, into the world, creating a family filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Tony was an avid fisherman, a man with a sharp sense of humor, and someone who found joy in life’s simplest pleasures. He took immense pride in his family, especially in his daughter Vivian’s accomplishments as a nurse and in his grandson Jacob’s decision to follow in his footsteps by joining the United States Air Force, continuing a proud legacy of service.
A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 824, he was bestowed the title General Emeritus, Tony will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud veteran, and a man of unwavering integrity. His laughter, wisdom, and the kindness he shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents Elias and Natalia Sayago, his brothers Louis, Manuel and John. He is also survived by his wife Heidi, daughter Vivian (Mike) grandchildren Jacob (Candace) Elizabeth (Daichi) 2 great grandchildren Luke & McKenna, brother Eddy, sister Natty and many nieces/nephews.
A visitation will take place on Friday December 20th at 11:00 AM at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, located at 2551 N.Armistead Ave, Hampton VA, 23666. Following the visitation will be a service at 12:00 PM, followed by a placement at Parklawn Wood Memorial Park.
