Gene was born Oct. 2, 1956 in Beckley, WV, to Eugene and Genevieve Morehouse. Eugene was a decorated WWII veteran who preceded his son on Nov. 14, 1970 in the tragic air accident involving the Marshall University “Thundering Herd“ football team.
Gene was a retired AMMO troop, an old-school 461 who was never without his coin! Gene studied Journalism at Marshall University prior to enlisting in the United Stated Air Force in 1977. He served Honorably during his years of service, and he was a participant of Operation El Dorado Canyon while stationed at RAF Lakenheath, England (April 86) and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm while assigned to Myrtle Beach AFB (90-91). Gene was stationed at; Cannon, Lakenheath, Langley, Luke, Myrtle Beach, Shaw and Spangdahlem, with a “short tour”to King Fahd International Airport. Gene and his family arrived at Langley AFB in June of 1992, where he retired and continued to call Hampton Roads home. Gene was proud of America, proud to have served his Country and was deeply satisfied in his service to our Great Nation. Gene was deeply honored to have served in the Munitions Maintenance Squadron with his Brothers-in-Arms.
Gene loved reading, cooking, World History and small arms. He loved West Virginia, Marshall University and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an avid sports fan with a love of basketball. Gene was a trivia buff (can you say, “What is Jeopardy,” Alex?) and was the “number six man” on a five-man debate team while stationed in Lakenheath. Gene enjoyed sharing his knowledge and playfully challenging yours, where he would sometimes state, “That bit of wisdom won me a beer or two in the pubs.” Gene had a quick mind and a great sense of humor. Gene was a good man with a wonderful heart. His smile was beautiful! Gene will be missed by all who loved him.
Gene is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Deana, his daughter Heather (former USAF Ssgt) and his son Daniel (former HS USAF ROTC). Gene also is survived by brothers; Mike, Stephen and Keith and sisters; Gail and Karen, nieces, nephews, friends and his AMMO family.
Funeral visitation services will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, 2p-4p, at Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, Hampton, VA (2251 N. Armistead Ave/Hampton Roads Ctr Pkwy – 754-827-4670) with internment in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Gene would have preferred donations be made to Wounded Warrior or The Jimmy V Foundation.
Rest in Sweet Peace, Gene!
