Garland “Scott” Smith, 53, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 after a two year courageous battle with cancer. He was born In Newport News, VA on September 29, 1966. He attended Warwick High School.
Scott loved music, playing his guitar, singing, sports (especially the Dallas Cowboys), fishing, and had a heart for all God’s animals. He loved the outdoors, sitting on his front porch in his oversized rocking chair talking with everyone and anyone who passed by, as he had many friends and acquaintances in his neighborhood. He was known by some as “Smiley” because you were always greeted with a smile and a kind word. He loved his childhood friends and maintained constant contact with them his entire adult life. He fed the birds and squirrels and had a great love for his last two dogs Tarzan and Taz. He was a man content with the life that God provided, not needing worldly possessions. His only needs were met through his personal relationships with his large family and multitude of friends.
He was preceded in rest by his step father, Donald V. Greathouse; his grandparents, Thomas E. & Vera Morris and Eunice Womack; his great grandparents, Clarence & Ella Morris and Charles & Edna Clark; and his nieces, Jennifer & Jessica Smith. He is survived by his Mother, Clara M. Greathouse; his brothers, Douglas W. Smith Jr. (Michele), Donald C. Greathouse (Jane); his sisters, Denise Whitt (Larry), and Tammy Jefferson (Clyde). He is also survived by two great aunts, Dorothy Griffin and Dot Griffin; aunts Barbara Morris and Brenda Strong (Danny); uncles Thomas Morris (Johnna), Charles Greathouse (Margarete), Harold Snyder (Doris), Jack Greathouse (Laurie), and Roy Greathouse. He is also survived by 4 nephews, 1 great nephew, 3 great nieces, numerous cousins, and an abundance of friends.
A memorial service will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Thursday January 16, 2020 at 1:00pm with a visitation to be held one hour prior.
