David Breckenridge Stewart, 80, passed away on October 13, 2017 surrounded by love. David was born and raised in the Fox Hill area of Hampton and spent many years in Great Falls, Virginia before retiring to Williamsburg in 2007.
David was predeceased by his parents, Duncan and Lola Lewis Stewart as well as his brother, Duncan W. Stewart. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn M. Stewart; brother, Bill Hayes (Brenda); cousin and loving caregiver, Melodye Dorst; and a host of nieces and nephews.
David was an avid and life-long dog lover, and is also survived by his beloved Willow, his 2 year old German Shepherd that filled his life with joy.
David graduated from Hampton High School, Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, and Catholic University of America with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music. He was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, and taught music in Fairfax County for over 30 years while also teaching voice privately. He influenced the love of music for literally thousands of students and loved his many years in the classroom.
David also loved the outdoors and could frequently be found wandering among the trees of his large Christmas tree farm in the rolling hills of Great Falls, lovingly and individually caring for thousands of trees. Communing with nature was sacred for David.
A special thanks goes out to his faithful caregivers, Melissa Marks, Cindy Gibbons, Kyle and Amber Morris, and Daniella Gendreau. Thank you all for helping his life to be as happy and fulfilling as it possibly could be. Also sincere thanks to his neurologist, Dr. Susan Brown, for all of her kindness towards David.
A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 20, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church in Hampton.
