She embodied the conservatism and unflinching morality of a woman plucked off the streets of Hamilton in the 1950’s. She lived completely independently while bypassing the computer age entirely. She preferred face to face communication even paying bills in person with cash so as to meet and know employees on a personal level.
Rose was an ardent follower of The Toronto Maple Leafs keeping faith through all those losing seasons. She also loved to watch tennis, tuning in to every Grand Slam Tournament. She had a passion for these sports in spite of never having donned a pair of skates, attended a hockey game, nor stepped onto a tennis court.
Besides sports, she enjoyed news shows especially regarding American and Canadian politics. She had little formal education but had a keen knowledge of the machinations of the international world, sharing her very liberal views with anyone interested.
Managing on her slender pension, Rose was generous to a fault, delighting in sending birthday gifts, yet she was frugal enough to allow for travel to Europe, Florida, California, Victoria and Arizona a number of times. Despite her resolute nature, when she vacationed, with her mother in tow, she made few advance plans for travel or lodging in foreign lands preferring to let chance determine where they would end up.
But planning and repetition were important to Rose in her daily life. Consider that she lived in the same apartment on Charlton Ave. for 46 years. And she was employed at Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary for 31 years. And her hair had to be styled every Saturday.
Rose fiercely guarded her independence. But as she aged she was beset by a number of physical ailments that threatened that but would never concede that they were holding her back or that age was a factor. She would complain about them but she wasn’t going to let her health defeat her. Until she couldn’t fight any longer and they did.
Remember Rose for her uniqueness, her zest for life, and the love she shared with us all.
Visitation will be held at CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME, 322 Fennell Avenue E. on Monday, December 9, 2024 from 2-4pm.
