Dr. Ken is predeceased by his wife, Eileen Somerton (2019). He is survived by his children; Dr. Anne Toth, John Somerton (Melissa), Susan Manglicmot, David Somerton and step-daughter, Debra Kobe (Trevor), his grandchildren; Suzanne, Bret, William, Cole, Chantelle, Chandler, Savannah, and Paige, and great-grandchildren; Owen, Ella, and Mia. He is survived by his nephew David and niece Kathryn. He was predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Annie Somerton and his sister Edith Engleson (the late Clarence).
Ken was a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, grew up in Sarnia, spent his adult life in London and returned to Hamilton in his final years. He enjoyed sailing his boat, fishing, hunting, swimming, playing tennis, woodworking, listening to music, appreciating artwork, reading, flying his plane, being outdoors with his family, stargazing and walking with his wife and their dogs.
Ken graduated from the Sarnia Collegiate and Technical School and received a bursary from Canon Davis Memorial Anglican Church to attend the University of Western Ontario. Graduating with a Licentiate in Theology from Huron College, UWO, in 1953, Ken served as a Deacon before returning to his studies and earning a degree in Social Work at the University of Toronto. In 1963, he graduated from UWO with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Somerton set up a private practice in London, Ontario where he worked as a family physician and surgeon, until his retirement.
Dr. Ken and Eileen moved from London to Queen's Garden, Long-Term Care Residence, Hamilton, in 2014. Ken was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and dementia and died peacefully at Queen's Garden. The family would like to thank the staff at Queen's Garden, for the time they took to get to know Ken, and warmly care for him through the years.
The family welcomes all to a visitation at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street E. (at Kenilworth) on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 12 p.m. in the funeral home chapel followed by a reception. Private family burial to take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London. In memory of Ken, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.
