Yvonne Ling (Mak) of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024 in Halifax surrounded by family. Yvonne was born in 1941 in Shanghai, China. As a student of the University of Hong Kong, she studied geography and graduated with honors. After graduation, she taught at St Stephen’s College in Hong Kong and later moved to Canada in 1967 where she and her beloved husband Frank of 56 years raised their five children. In those early years, Yvonne volunteered at the Nova Scotia Museum of Nature, canvassed for the Nova Scotia Cancer society and helped out with the local Girl Guides. Yvonne enjoyed crafts with the neighborhood kids, sewing and knitting. She spent many fun years watching her children at their music concerts, at the pool and on the tennis court. Later, she worked diligently in administration at the school of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University where she treated the students just like her own children. In acknowledgement of her fine character, the school named an award after her. Yvonne will always be remembered for her warm, gentle smile, genuine modesty, and her patience with everything especially with young children and seniors. She always had time to listen and share her wisdom. She had a shy and quiet nature, was highly intelligent and always had a clear, sharp mind even to her last day.
Above all, Yvonne was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother. She will be profoundly missed as she leaves behind her husband Frank Ling, Halifax; her children Constance Ling (Riki Sahajpal), their sons, Ronan and Kiran, Ottawa; Karen Ling (John Melanson), their children, Carlin, Ryllan, Adele, Reid and Keaton, Ottawa; Audrey Ling (Francois Charron), their sons, Mathieu, Brandon, Jordan and Tyler, Ottawa; Debbie Ling (John-Paul Cody-Cox), their daughters Madeleine and Abigail, Ottawa; Andrew Ling ( Brittany Sanford Ling), their son Logan, Halifax; her sister-in-law Alice Bruist Mak, her daughters Heather and Claudia Mak, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her cherished brother Ronald Mak and nephew Kyle and her beloved mother and step father, Nora and Raymond Senner. Yvonne is fondly remembered by her many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Cruikshank Funeral home. In keeping with her wishes, she will be surrounded by her family for a private ceremony.
The family very much wishes to acknowledge Dr. Finlay Spicer and Janis Bowser, administrative assistant, for their extraordinary efforts, patience and exceptional care; and all those who provided incredible love, generosity and support over the years.
A celebration of life will be planned in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Lymphoma Canada or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada in Yvonne’s memory.
