Vivian Flanders Phillips

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Phil at the age of 96, on March 27, 2022. Born in Bahia Brazil on April 1, 1925, the fourth child to Walter Frank Phillips and Margaret Ellen (Alexander) Phillips.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Gwen, Windsor, and Ronald; along with his son, Trevor John. Survived by his wife of 72 years, Brenda (Hopper) Phillips; his daughters, Linda (Tom) Weckman, Susan (Michael) Hale; grandchildren, Meaghan (Luke) Woodhead, Matthew (Shannon) Weckman, Christopher Scully, Victoria (Neil) Scully, Catherine Scully; and great-grandchildren, Ella and Jack Woodhead, Charleigh, Austin, and Emmett Weckman.

Phil and his brother Ronald, traveled to England in 1933 by ship where he attended Harlow College in Essex England. After moving to Sunderland England he attended Bede School for a year and then on to Sunderland University where he studied and graduated in 1945 as a Mechanical Engineer. He went to sea as a Junior Officer with his first ship being the SS Thistleford, later achieving his Chief Engineer certificate in 1948. He went on to work at the National Boiler Insurance Company in Chelmsford England and then became the Assistant Manager of Greenwood Shipyards in Sunderland England. Phil and his wife Brenda, along with their two daughters Linda and Susan, moved to Canada by ship in 1957 where he joined GTR Campbell and Company in Montreal, Que. living in Chateauguay, Que. They moved to Halifax in 1961, opening an office for George Campbell, which he subsequently purchased and renamed Marine Side Surveys where he worked until his retirement in 1990. Phil’s passion for sports not only included playing Soccer and in later years an armchair coach/referee but included memberships at both Oakfield Golf and Country Club and Chester Golf Club. During his time at Oakfield, he was a long time member of the board. In addition both Phil and Brenda curled at the Mayflower Curling Club for many years. He played all sports with his many friends and family. Phil had a strong faith and was a member of the parish council at St Peter's Anglican Church. In addition, he was actively involved in the Kiwanis of Halifax in various capacities. He and Brenda spent many years at their cottage on Marvin’s Island, where he was a member and subsequent president of the Marvin’s Island Owners Association, and spent many hours sailing on their beloved boat the “Trelinso”, being friends to all. Special thanks go out to all the staff in unit 8.4 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, as well as all of his friends staff and caregivers in Shannex Parkland (Cameron Hall)

A Memorial Service will be held in St Peter’s Anglican Church, 3 Dakin Dr., Halifax, Friday April 1st, at 11:30 a.m. Masking is required. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Peters Anglican Church.
